One million cubic metres of earth have now been moved as construction continues on Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.
The milestone is just one of many more to come, with 21 million cubic metres of earth — the equivalent of 8800 Olympic swimming pools — yet to be shifted.
The 1780ha site is being levelled for the new airport, making it one of the biggest earthmoving projects in Australian history.
MILESTONES SINCE WORK BEGAN IN 2018
1. In March, the airport was officially named Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport in honour of one of the country’s aviation icons. She was Australia’s first female pilot licensed to carry passengers.
2. Memorandums of understanding have been signed with Qantas Group and Virgin Australia Group. The airlines will be involved with the design and planning of the new airport and provide input on baggage handling, security, parking, passenger terminal and boarding systems.
3. Work has begun on the airport’s Visitor Centre. Members of the public will be able to visit the facility and see the airport come to life. Community and school groups as well as local and international visitors will be given free access.
4. The new Badgerys Creek Rd bridge, measuring 49m wide, is being constructed on-site. Badgerys Creek Rd, which currently runs through the airport site, will be realigned.
5. Architectus has been appointed to plan the airport’s on-site business park. It is nearly 200ha in size.
