Motorists will have their first look inside the soon-to-be-completed M8 Tunnels as part of the massive WestConnex project.
The NSW Government released a virtual sneak peek inside the $4.3 billion, dual nine kilometre tunnels which will stretch from Kingsgrove to St Peters.
NewsCorp understands the massive project is expected to open to the public in six weeks time — if ongoing testing remains on track.
TOUR THE TUNNELS
Transport for NSW chief operations officer Howard Collins said the virtual tour of the tunnels provides motorists with a realistic look at what the can expect when the project opens to the public.
“We want to ensure motorists are familiar with the new entry and exit points where drivers will navigate new movements, as well as how the motorway connects to the broader road network,” he said.
The additional tunnels in the WestConnex network, which will cut around 30 minutes off commute times between Liverpool and South Sydney, are scheduled to open between July and September this year according to WestConnex chief executive Andrew Head.
“More than 16,000 people have worked on the project to date and more than 80 per cent of contracts have been with NSW based suppliers,” he said.
More than 100,000 motorists travel in the M5 East tunnels everyday, making them some of the most congested roads in Sydney.
The new tunnels — which will be renamed the M8 on completion — will double the capacity of the road corridor and provide entry and exit points to the Airport, Port Botany, Alexandria, Mascot and surrounding suburbs.
