A Chinese student is in a critical condition after a wild brawl allegedly erupted between two groups of men near Burwood train station on Monday night.
A 29-year-old UK national charged over the incident did not appear or apply for bail at Burwood Local Court today.
The student, who is from Campsie, was initially rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with injuries described as “serious” but police have confirmed his condition has now been upgraded to critical but stable.
Burwood Police Area Command detective chief inspector Ian Pryde told the Courier the victim underwent surgery for head injuries this morning and was now in an induced coma after a fight broke out between two groups of men near Burwood train station.
UK national Brad Nichol, 29, has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and affray following the violent altercation.
“The victim’s group and the defendant’s group came into contact with each other on Burwood Rd (near Deane St) about 11.45pm,” Insp. Pryde said.
Police will allege a fight erupted before the groups separated but then another confrontation occurred shortly afterwards.
“The victim’s group headed towards Burwood railway station and the victim has then left his group and run towards the defendant,” Insp. Pryde said.
“The defendant is alleged to have struck the victim once to the head, resulting in the victim falling to the ground and striking his head, losing consciousness.
“Police and paramedics attended the scene and the victim was taken to RPA and has undergone surgery.”
Mr Nichol, of Petersham, and his friend were arrested at the scene shortly afterwards.
“The defendant was interviewed and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray,” Insp Pryde said. “His friend was released pending further inquiries.”
At Burwood court, the matter was adjourned to March 26.
