Massive changes to Sydney’s Inner West transport services have been touted as a “big win” for commuters, with hundreds of extra services and extended hours added to one of the city’s busiest tram lines.
The L1 Dulwich Hill line will see an extra 160 services added weekly after NSW Transport announced that from April 29, services will extend from 6am-11pm to 5am-1am.
This totals an additional 450 services per week on the Inner West Light Rail (L1) since June 2023, with NSW Government saying the move supported “the revival of the night time economy” while making it easier to travel around Sydney.
Over the past two years, the L1 lines usage figures have increased dramatically, nearly closing in on pre-covid levels.
Transport Minister Jo Haylen said she was excited about the new change.
“This permanent extension to the L1 operating hours is a big win for the inner west,” she said.
“Every time we’ve extended light rail operating hours for major events, people have flocked to the late night services.
“With an earlier start time of 5am, Light Rail will also become a great option for early risers, heading to work in areas like Pyrmont, Ultimo and the CBD.”
Trying to improve frequency along the line, Ms Haylen hopes the updated timetable will help commuters reach their destination ever night of the week.
“Every night is a good night to be out and about in Sydney, so ensuring people have a way home is vital,” she said.
Transport Coordinator General Howard Collin said with the light rail growing in popularity, they’ll do everything to meet the growing demand.
“Not only will this guarantee a better service for passengers in the Inner West, but it’ll make our light rail network easier to navigate for visitors who will appreciate the consistency across all of our lines,” he said.
Services will run every fifteen minutes from 5am to 6am every morning, with a service every 15 minutes from 11pm to 1am each night.
