Gang of youths attack delivery driver in Sydney's inner - west

A teen has been charged after footage emerged of a group terrorising and attacking a food delivery driver in Sydney’s inner – west.

The video – captured by a Glebe resident on April 15, opens with a group hurling objects at a man in a yellow – high visibility uniform and shining torch lights at him.

They argue with the driver, forcing him backwards into a corner on the street, before appearing to throw glass bottles at him, which smash on the ground at his feet.

A man on a blue e-bike then rides towards the rowdy group, along with several other youths, before quickly jumping from the motorised vehicle and grabbing hold of the delivery driver with two hands.

In the video the group continue to point and shout at the driver and scream “get him now” among themselves as the driver runs from the scene and is chased down the street by his attackers before the video concludes.

The resident who videoed the violent attack – “Tim”, said he heard the group later bragging about how they had “stomped” on the man and described a number of recent vicious behaviour in the area.

“They’d been sitting there most of the night, drinking vodka. I found the remnants of a Smirnoff vodka bottle the next day,” he told 2GB’s Ben Fordham.

“You’ve got a delivery driver just doing his job, they’ve set upon him.

“This guy, when you see the footage, he just comes charging in.”

The local said the nearby 7 Eleven service station was a hot spot for violent activity in recent weeks, with staff attacked and property damaged.

“ I wouldn’t go out at night unless I absolutely had to,” Tim said.

Police were called to the scene on Glebe Point Road following reports of the incident however the group had dispersed before officers arrived.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested last Wednesday and charged with drive conveyance taken without consent of owner and affray before being granted conditional bail to appear in court on May 29.

GROWING CONCERN

It comes amid growing concerns throughout the local community with a Facebook user posting to ‘Glebe Locals’ on Sunday, saying “ITS TIME TO CLEAN GLEBE UP”.

The man said he had been “quiet for too long” and he and a friend have put their hands up and “started moving all the kids out of Glebe”.

He said the pair had been out the past “3 / 4 nights” and called on others to message him if they saw groups “carrying on and being disrespectful” and he would move them on.

The man claimed in comments of the now deleted post that “the police [were] actually thanking us” and “if the police are knocking on my door asking for help I’m going to do it my way”.

NSW Police refused to answer questions about vigilantism in the community.
