Tien-Jui SU, Po Tung SU, Kee Ping Lim, charged over alleged sending 80 million fraudulent text messages in phishing scam

Three men have been named over their alleged involvement in a massive phishing scam that saw more than 80 million texts sent to unsuspecting victims. Here is what we know.

Three men have been charged with allegedly sending over 80 million fraudulent text messages to unsuspecting victims in what has been described as one of the state’s largest phishing scams.

Through assistance from telecommunications network, police were able to identify the location of SIM boxes, allegedly used to send bulk text messages across the Australian telecommunications network, containing fraudulent links directing the victim to an illegitimate website for the purpose of financial gain.

Police allege these sim boxes are responsible for sending over 80 million messages in five months.

Following inquiries, on February 15, 2024, strike force detectives with assistance from the Public Order & Riot Squad executed two search warrants at a unit in Burwood.

Police arrested Tien-Jui SU, 37, and Po Tung SU, 43, locating three large SIM boxes and a number of SIM cards while a second unit arrested Kee Ping Lim, 35, also in position of a large amount of identity information, SIM cards, cannabis, and eight mobile phones.

All three were taken to Burwood Police Station where Tien-Jui SU and Po Tung SU were charged with using equipment connected to network to commit serious offence.

Kee Ping Lim was charged with Use equipment connected to network to commit serious offence, deal with identity info to commit and possess prohibited drug.

All three men were refused bail and appeared in Burwood Local Court on Friday 16 February 2024 where they were formally refused bail to re-appear in the same court on Friday 1 March 2024.
