A Sydney council has been forced to apologise to veterans and remove Anzac Day banners as they contained a “disrespectful” spelling error.
The City of Canada Bay has confirmed it had to pull down 30 giant banners which read: “Lest we forgot”.
Canada Bay councillor Stephanie Di Pasqua alerted staff after spotting the error in banners on Majors Bay Rd in Concord on Tuesday morning.
“It is incredibly disappointing to see that the banners featured incorrect spelling,” she said.
“To our local veterans, I say on behalf of the community that you deserve better than this terrible oversight and we are very sorry for the disrespect and carelessness shown by the council.
“Our community deserve to know how these banners were approved and allowed to be displayed in such an egregious manner.”
The council’s general manager Peter Gainsford described the debacle as “an extremely unfortunate, and disrespectful, error”.
“I am extremely disappointed and accept full responsibility,” Mr Gainsford said.
He said the error was due to a miscommunication between council staff and the printer of the banners.
“I have spoken to representatives of the Concord, Five Dock and Drummoyne RSL branches this morning and unreservedly apologised for any offence,” he said.
“I would like to apologise to our community, in particular to the members of our local RSL branches and to our veterans, for this egregious error.”
