Four sides remain within a win of the top six after round six of the Sydney Shires Cricket first-grade competition, while one side gave themselves breathing room at the top of the table.

The biggest clash of the weekend was in Concord as the undefeated Burwood Briars and Epping Bulls faced off at Ron Routley Oval.

As well as being a top-of-the-table clash, the match was also part of the 28th iteration of the Turnbull/Richardson Trophy, an award handed to the club that wins the most club points when the Bulls and Briars play each year.

Burwood won the toss at Ron Routley Oval and sent the visitors in to bat, and the decision was quickly rewarded as they ripped through the top order to leave Epping at 6/37.

Epping fought back thanks to a rescue mission from Akshay Nichkawde and Karl Stuart pushed the team’s total to 129 before they were bowled out in the 43rd over.

Burwood had the most prolific batting order coming in to round six, and looked to be cruising towards a victory at 2/37 before a mini collapse left them at 5/43.

Brenton Wright and Andrew Jalalaty combined for a settling partnership of 30, but another late collapse of 4/4 saw the home side bowled out for just 98.

Despite the first-grade loss, Burwood picked up the Turnbull/Richardson Trophy for the 25th time thanks to wins in second grade, third grade, and fourth grade.

The Turnbull/Richardson Trophy was first contested in 1992/93 after a proposal by Epping life member Ken Willcox.

Burwood held the cup for 20 years before Epping’s first conquest in the 2012/13 season.

The cup was named in honour of legends of the two clubs: Perc Turnbull of Epping and Peter Richardson of Burwood.

Perc Turnbull first played for Epping in 1948/49, and is the club’s leading wicket taker with a whopping 1,084 wickets at an average of 15.80. He also scored 3984 runs and took 219 catches during his long career.

Turnbull was the original chairman of the Sydney Shires competition committee, and the inaugural Shires representative on the NSW Cricket Association committee.

He was awarded life membership of the club in 1975 and inducted as a Legend of Shires in 2005 before passing away in 2010.

Peter Richardson was a longstanding member of the Burwood Cricket Club who scored 8008 runs, took 30 wickets, and 286 catches during his career.

He was the club’s president from 1985-1988, was awarded life membership in 1996, and was posthumously named a Legend of Shires in 2010.
