Burwood Cricket Club has continued its perfect start to season 2020/21 in a statement win over Georges River in round two of the Sydney Shires Cricket competition to join three other undefeated teams on top of the first-grade ladder.

After a strong win over last summer’s premiers, Auburn, in round one, Burwood travelled to Bexley Oval with a chance to solidify its position in the top four.

The Briars won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that paid off almost immediately as openers Andrew Jalalaty and Tim Rose put an opening stand of 78 before Jalalaty was dismissed for 51.

Georges River had an LBW shout turned down early in Burwood’s inning on Saturday at Bexley Oval.

The away side suffered a mini collapse of 3/13 after the first wicket, but solid innings from middle-order batsmen Tom Parton (38), Brenton Wright (29) and Karl Vendrasco (27*) guided Burwood to a defensible score of 6/216.

Georges Rivers were building a solid innings in response, and seemed to be cruising at 4/113.

However, a lower order collapse of 6/22 meant Ben Vella’s run-a-ball 44 wasn’t enough to drag his side to victory.

Roseville are the early pace setters of the competition, as they followed up last weekend’s big win over Pennant Hills with a 101-run victory over Warringah.

Lane Cove and Epping also continued their unblemished start to the season to round off the current top four.
