- Sydney Shires Cricket 2020/21: First-grade season preview
Sydney Shires Cricket’s first round is in the books despite a wild weekend of wet weather around the city.
Five out of six first-grade matches managed enough play to sort out a result, but lower grades were heavily affected, with more than 50 per cent of matches rained out.
The match of the round was undeniably the clash between Burwood and Auburn at George Parry Oval.
Both sides finished the season inside the top four in 2019/20, and were on path to meet in the grand final before the season was stopped before the semi-finals due to COVID-19.
Auburn won the toss and sent Burwood in to bat, and that decision looked to have paid off when the attack had the visitors teetering at 4/28.
However, Tom Parton’s 49 helped the visitors build a defensible score of 137 from 42.5 overs.
Auburn’s run chase never really got started, as no player scored more than 15 runs before the innings, and match, was called after just 17.2 overs with the home side at just 4/38, giving Burwood the victory.
Georges River, Roseville, and Epping all earned bonus points in round one to sit on top of the ladder after the first weekend.
Strathfield and Mt Pritchard-Southern Districts did not play in round one, and Balmain South Sydney had the bye.
