Jonathan Hong is just nine but already boasts a better handicap than Tiger Woods
Jonathan Hong’s coach believes the nine year-old Newington golfer could be the youngest player in the game to achieve a scratch handicap.
Jonathan Hong is the pint-sized golfer from Five Dock’s Barnwell Golf Club that boasts a better handicap than Tiger Woods did at age 13.
The nine-year-old reached scratch (a player that shoots at or better than par) four years earlier than Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, who all reached it at age 13.
He has even caught the attention of Australian legend Greg Norman, who has admitted to being impressed by the young golfer from Newington.
Jonathan’s coach, Chris Willard, believes Jonathan could be the youngest player in the game to achieve a scratch handicap.
“I can confidently say that Jonathan is one of the best players in the world,” Willard, who said the Jonathan’s natural ability caught his eye in 2017, said.
“He’s achieving incredible feats for any professional player, regardless of age.
“He was the youngest golfer to ever play the major pennants and recently won the men’s open A grade match play championships.”
“He’s incredibly dedicated and has a strong work ethic.
“He trains around 50 hours a week chasing his dream to compete against icons like Tiger Woods.”
City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said Jonathan was a young star hitting golf milestones years ahead of elite world champions.
“We are extremely proud of him and have no doubt he will continue to make us proud competing on the world stage,” Cr Tsirekas said.
