Transport for NSW has finally set a timeline to make a number of Inner West train stations accessible.
Works for the Petersham station upgrade will begin in early 2020, taking about 18 months to complete.
Renovations at Stanmore and St Peters will be completed by 2023.
On Facebook, Inner West mayor Darcy Byrne said: “We have forced the State Government to finally agree to accessibility upgrades to Petersham, Stanmore and St Peters train stations.”
“After years of dragging its feet, Transport NSW will soon start work on the three stations, making them accessible to people of all abilities,” it stated.
“This is a great win for our community, and shows that local voices can affect real change locally.”
Petersham, Stanmore and Lewisham have been listed as high priority ‘in need’ stations by Sydney Trains’.
The Petersham upgrade will include two new lifts connecting the station entrance to the platform, a new access ramp, a new family accessible toilet, a male and female ambulant toilet, and new accessible parking spaces near the lift.
CCTV and new bicycle parking will also be added to the station.
Upgrades to Stanmore and St Peters will also “make these stations fully accessible”.
Dulwich Hill station, second on a 2013 Transport for NSW list of the 100 stations most deserving of an upgrade, was delayed for the conversion of the T3 Bankstown Line to the Sydney Metro.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said: “Sydney Metro services start in 2024. Where a station upgrade like a new lift or new station entry can be opened early, we’ll deliver that as quickly as possible with these upgrades being opened progressively from 2020.”
