Almost $90,000 worth of fines has been handed out to restaurants across Sydney in the last three months, but one inner-west suburb stands well-above the rest of top offenders.

The NSW Food Authority has issued $85,300 worth of fines to 44 restaurants between May 15 and August 14 over unsatisfactory cleanliness, failed food standards, and allegedly supplying food that is not of the nature or substance demanded by the purchaser.

Burwood restaurants made up almost half of the fines, being hit with $40,040 worth of infringements and some establishments breaching health standards up to six times.

Burwood-based Hong Kong Yue Baby was hit with seven offences and issued with $6820 in fines, including failing to comply with a prohibition order and failing to meet a standard of cleanliness after previous warnings.

Nearby restaurant New Hunan Noodle Bar was issued a $5280 fine for six offences.

Another Burwood restaurant, Pot & Sizzle was slapped with $4400 worth of fines after it failed to store food safely. It also failed to meet cleanliness standards and left equipment in a state of disrepair.

Xi Bay Handmade Noodle restaurant was also slapped with the same amount.

A council spokeswoman said Burwood undertakes a broad range of regulatory inspections on food premises.

“To date, we have inspected approximately 400 food premises, issuing fines to only a small percentage of businesses,” she said.

“The overwhelming majority … have demonstrated compliance, with many achieving exceptional results and earning (a) five star rating.

The spokeswoman said Burwood Council conducts its inspections “in accordance with NSW Food Authority Guidelines and legislation”.

“By adopting a proactive approach and maintaining a regular presence within our businesses, we hope to ensure the safety of our community and support the growth of Burwood as a renowned food destination that everyone can enjoy,” she said.
