Newtown: KFC set to move into King St, locals speak out

A controversial KFC is coming to Sydney’s inner west in a matter of weeks it won’t be on some locals’ bucket list. Here’s what we know.

A controversial KFC coming to trendy Newtown could open in a matter of weeks.

The fast food restaurant’s doors are planned to open on July 4, however a KFC spokeswoman was unable to confirm the date in case of last minute changes.

“KFC Newtown is opening in July and we look forward to welcoming the new restaurant team and local customers,” she said.

Plans for the KFC were approved last year and received a mixed response from locals with some stating the area didn’t need another chicken shop and others joking it was finger-lickin’ good news.

The restaurant will be located at 171 King Street, nestled between six other chicken shops in a 100m radius which includes Gami Chicken, El Jannah Chicken, Ogalo Newtown, Broaster Chicken and Clem’s.

Gami managing director Adnan Khalid had a bone to pick with the planned competitor and previously told NewsLocal the area did not need any more chicken shops, especially not a fast food giant.

“I’ve always believed in supporting locals … local shops, local brands. I think that’s what brings the community out, not some bigger brands coming in and destroying the smaller guy,” he said.

Long-time Newtown resident Andrew McCarthy said he was “disappointed” a KFC is coming to the strip.

“Newtown has always been known for its vibrancy and its uniqueness and now it’s become a victim of its own success,” he said.

“King Street is just becoming like any other high street scattered throughout the city.

“I lament over the old days when Newtown was weird, wonderful and fabulous.”

To prepare for the opening KFC Newtown is advertising team member and assistant restaurant manager positions on their website.

The site previously housed the Kammadhenu restaurant, which specialised in south Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine.

The KFC will seat up to 14 people and trade until 11pm from Sunday to Thursday and until 2am from Friday to Saturday.
