Nine months have passed since Mejid Hamzy’s bloody slaying. Now, two men are behind bars on remand after facing court for the first time for their alleged roles in the underworld hit.

Mejid Hamzy hit: Fears of new all-out Sydney gang war

The two men charged over the underworld slaying of Mejid Hamzy will remain behind bars after police made the first major break in the unsolved case on Wednesday.

Omar brothers Ezzeddine, 38, and Mohammed, 44, faced court for the first time yesterday, charged with their alleged roles in the killing of crime tsar Mejid Hamzy at Condell Park last October.

Neither of the men are accused of being the shooter, and police allege Ezzeddine organised the hit while Mohammed is alleged to have assisted in concealing a getaway car used in the shooting.

Hamzy died in a hail of bullets outside his own home in a bloody scene that saw a brewing underworld feud erupt on Sydney’s streets.

Hamzy’s brother Bassam is one of the state’s most feared prison inmates who has managed to maintain his criminal influence on the outside from his Goulburn Supermax cell.

Both the Omar brothers this week find themselves behind bars on remand in different correctional centres, places where Bassam Hamzy’s Brothers 4 Life gang is known to have dutiful lieutenants.

It will be alleged that Ezzeddine Omar was a known associate of the Alameddine crime network and that he had been paid to orchestrate and carry out the murder.

Several members and associates of the Hamzy and Alameddine families have been subject to serious crime prevention orders which places onerous restrictions on their movements as police look to quell the street violence raging in south-west Sydney.

Appearing in Liverpool Local Court yesterday charged with murder and drug offences, Ezzeddine Omar made no application for bail and will return to Bankstown Local Court in September.

Mohammed Omar, 44, remained in the cells at Burwood Local Court when his matter was briefly mentioned on Wednesday.

His solicitor told the court they were in the process of briefing a barrister to run a bail application at a later date where a specialist police prosecutor would oppose his release.

Omar was arrested and charged with a raft of drug offences including manufacturing and possessing precursor substances.

Police will allege in court Omar was involved in concealing a BMW used in the hit.

The car in question was seen in CCTV footage released by police travelling from Moorebank to Condell Park the night Hamzy was shot, before returning to Luddenham.
