US actor Matthew McConaughey has joined forces with groundbreaking Sydney start-up Unyoked, that offers off-grid cabin retreats to help us unplug from life.
McConaughey was in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens today with an Unyoked cabin he helped design as part of an Unyoked and Wild Turkey With Thanks launch “designed to recognise, and support Aussie’s demonstrating unwavering conviction to protect and preserve their unique wilderness”.
The collaboration is designed to give back to conservation in Australia,; a country where 25 per cent of the rainforest and 50 per cent of the forest has been lost over the past 200 years and the wildife extinction rate is one of the highest in the world.
The eco-cabin will be relocated two hours north of Sydney on the Central Coast and for the lifetime of the cabin all the funds generated will be donated, along with $1 from every Wild Turkey Longbranch this year will go to Unyoked’s charity partner, The Foundation for Natural Parks and Wildlife.
Twin brothers Cameron and Chris Grant, from Sydney, launched Unyoked in 2016 to help us reconnect with the wilderness at our doorstep.
“We were yoked to a desk essentially, taking one holiday a year and coming back even more stressed,” Cameron said.
“We realised hey we should build a few cabins, find some awesome wilderness locations within reach of the CBD and get out to them often and that helped us regain some of our freedom and it is helping others to the same.”
McConaughey was the design director on the construction of The Reserve by Wild Turkey x Unyoked eco-cabin.
“It was a natural fit for me to come here, as you know it is a bit of a second home for me as an exchange student and I shot a few films here,” McConaughey said.
McConaughey spoke about spending a year in Australia two weeks out of high school, of his favourite Australian animal - the brown snake - and of the need to spend time on your own to unwind and reconnect with nature and yourself.
“Hopefully you can head out to a cabin like this, on your own, and come back to your city and your job and be a lot better at it,” he said.
