Children’s authors Kate and Jol Temple have pulled together some of Australia’s funniest media personalities and children’s authors, including Richard Roxburgh and Kathy Lette, to produce a hilarious children’s charity anthology.

The Rozelle couple, together with author and comedian Oliver Phommavanh, are the editors of the anthology, Funny Bones that will be launched at Marrickville Library at 11am on Sunday at an event that will feature fun, games, live performances and readings.

Temple said Funny Bones, that contains more than 100 hilarious one-liners, jokes, shaggy dog tales as well as silly stories and wise-cracking cartoons, was raising money for War Child Australia, a charity dedicated to providing aid to children affected by war.

Funny Bones came about over a dinner we had with our publisher and agent,” she said.

“We all wanted to find a way to create a good book with a great social impact. Funny Bones sure does that!”

The Temples exploded onto the Australian children’s when their book I Got This Hat was used as the 2016 National Simultaneous Storytime and the many fun books for kids they have produced includes the award-winning Captain Jimmy Cook Discovers Third Grade. And Funny Bones is their chance to give back.

“There’s something for everyone in Funny Bones,” Temple said.

“For the little kids there’s illustrated stories and jokes that will get them reading and laughing and for the big kids some great stories. One of our favourites is Gun Gordon’s very funny donkey tale.”

She said the big list of funny people involved, that includes Zoe Foster Blake, Josh Pyke, Andy Griffiths, Hannah Gadsby, Lawrence Leung, James O’Loghlin, Danny Katz, Sally Rippin and The Listies, had donated their work and their time. It has been a busy time for the inner west couple, who have also been working on a new book of their own.

“We love writing funny books,” Temple said. “Our own book Birthday Wars just came out and like Funny Bones it’s also super silly. It’s all about class enemies that have their birthday parties on the same day at the same time… obviously, this equals some sprinkly disaster.”
