THERE’S the Newtowner, the Surry Hills Pils and the Paddo Pale. Now a new lager joins the growing list of boutique beers to be brewed in and named after a Sydney suburb.

A SUBURBAN battle is brewing over which inner city locale has the best beer. Marrickville now boasts its own beer to rival the likes of Surry Hills Pils, The Newtowner and Paddo Pale thanks to the blokes behind Willie the Boatman brewery.
Marrickville Lager launched last week at suburban bar Gasoline Pony — and it is quintessential Marrickville.
“To produce the lager, we really did think about Marrickville as a community and all the food you get here,” brewer Pat McInerney told the Inner West Courier.
“We wanted to have something that can be enjoyed with all the amazing multicultural cuisine in the area.
“To think about that, it just kept coming back to a lager — something clean and fresh that’s not going to interfere with the food.
“It’s very traditional … it has a great nose, it’s beautiful and fresh on the palate and it finishes really dry.”
Marrickville Lager is now on tap “from Marrickville to Randwick” but its heartland is its key target market.
“I want it to be in every hotel in Marrickville,” Mr McInerney said. “I hope it’s something that we can all embrace, enjoy and love.
“It’s something to be proud of but it’s also something to enjoy and something to have a bit of a laugh over as well.”
And how does it compare to its inner city rivals?
“I think this is going to stand out above the rest — like Marrickville itself.”
