Jamie Parker and Jenny Leong retain Balmain and Newtown for the Greens

Greens MPs Jenny Leong and Jamie Parker have enjoyed resounding wins to retain their seats of Newtown and Balmain in the NSW election.

The pair had claimed victory by 8pm in front of an ecstatic crowd of supporters at the Palace Hotel in Haymarket.

Mr Parker said climate change and opposition to major road projects including WestConnex and the Western Harbour Tunnel were key issues in the minds of voters as they headed to the polls on Saturday.

Political experts had predicted the marginal seat could go down to the wire in a contest with Labor’s Elly Howse.

But Mr Parker had a resounding win over Ms Howse, securing 60.35 per cent of first preference votes on a two candidate preferred basis compared to Ms Howse’s 39.65 per cent.

The ABC are predicting a massive swing towards Mr Parker of 5.9 per cent.

Ms Leong secured a whopping 64.81 per cent of first preference votes, almost double her nearest rival, Labor’s Norma Ingram who had secured 35.19 per cent on a two candidate preferred basis.

“People wanted to make sure we had a voice in parliament who could hold the major parties to account,” Mr Parker said.

“Especially on WestConnex, public transport, environment and climate change.

“People wanted a strong independent voice who will stand up for the important issues in our community like public transport, climate change, WestConnex and protecting nature.

“People are saying rather than investing billions in tollways, we should be investing in public transport.

“Thankyou to the people of Balmain who have shown such confidence in me and I won’t let them down.”
