The construction boom in Sydney’s inner west shows no sign of slowing down, with plans revealed for another massive tower in the heart of Homebush.
Over the past five years billions have been spent building commercial high-rises as developers pounced on prime land from Glebe to Burwood, with another $51 million project now on the way.
The proposal, lodged with Strathfield Council earlier this month, would see the construction of a 25-storey building on 21 Parramatta Rd encompassing 202 apartments and ground floor retail tenancies.
Barangaroo firm Hyside Projects Subtwo are behind the ambitious plan, which has been referred to the Sydney East City Planning Panel.
Artist’s impressions of their vision for the tower have been released, detailing what nearby residents will see if the project is given the go-ahead.
A confidential report released in 2015 claimed the State Government could recoup $2 billion from developers eyeing up Parramatta Rd alone.
At the time, consultants were predicting the huge figure would come from stamp duty and taxes levied against companies looking to build on the busy strip.
The report spruiked the potential for funds to flow into government coffers from the formerly dilapidated corridor, which has been a hive of activity in recent years.
Homebush itself has been the site of immense growth and public stand-offs over the past decade as the previously quiet slice of suburbia transformed into a commercial hub.
One of the key projects credited with the changes is WestConnex.
Last November Strathfield MP and state Labor leader Jodi McKay said the $16 billion infrastructure project had caused “nightmares” for local residents and that residual land leftover from WestConnex was bound to be snapped up by developers.
