When singer Greg Gould was told not to be too gay at just 16 during an audition, it ignited a desire to sing it from the rooftops — and this is what he has been doing at his annual Mardi Gras concerts.

The controversial comment to the impressionable teen did initially cause disillusionment but a life-threatening flash flood in 2012 — in which Gould had to swim 2km to safety — put it all into perspective.

He would not let the comment hold him down, he would use it as fuel to drive him forward.

And drive him forward it did.

Gould was named runner-up of Australia’s Got Talent in 2013 and won a whole new legion of fans with his rendition of Prince’s Purple Rain.

“Self confidence is something I still struggle with but I keep my head held high with the work that I produce, the people I am blessed to get creative with and share stages with and I really had to learn to love myself, trust myself and work hard to be a good human so that I could be proud of the person I am,” he said.

In March last year, Gould teamed up with Christine Anu to recreate the duet from Rent Without You. This marks Gould’s first release through ABC/Universal Music Australia.

The track reached number seven on the Australian charts with the lyric video capturing photography from around the world, each photo featuring a splash of red for HIV/AIDS awareness and support.

At his third annual Mardi Gras concert, Greg Gould with special guests Cosimo De Vito and Prinnie Stevens, Gould will be performing his take on the greatest Mardi Gras anthems plus his audience will get a sneak peak of the songs on his new duets album.

Some of the big names on the upcoming duets album include Rhonda Burchmore, Katie Underwood and US singer India Arie, who features on the opening track.

Gould is teaming up with De Vito on a Tina Arena track.

“Tina Arena is an amazing vocalist,” De Vito, who confesses she had an Arena song playing at her wedding reception, said.
