DRUMMOYNE’S Georgia Anderson has come a long way since dancing around the house with her older sister.
The 22-year-old has just been cast in Sydney’s production of the iconic broadway musical West Side Story.
She will play Estella, a member of the teenage street gang, the Sharks.
“What I love about the Sharks is they are very feisty, hungry and sassy,” she said.
“They have got a lot of strength from their backgrounds, they are moving to America, they are fighting for their rights.
“I love dancing for empowerment and meaning.
“Dancing with that much story behind it is something I really enjoy doing, rather than just learning steps.
“What an incredible story to tell, I’m really excited.”
Miss Anderson said she credits her sister for instilling her passion for dance at a young age.
“My older sister was a dancer, I always used to copy her around the house, so naturally I followed her footsteps,” she said.
“I started dancing at five, learning jazz, tap and ballet.”
She then went on to train professionally and Brent Street Performing Arts School.
“They always say the first audition is the hardest, so once you get through, hopefully it continues on.
“This is the biggest job I’ve ever done, especially being West Side Story, you never think it would come back, let alone be able to do the show.”
Being so fresh to musical theatre, Miss Anderson said she is looking forward to learning from the other performers and choreographers.
West Side Story will play on Sydney Harbour from March 22 to April 21, 2019.
