Clayton Barron hid MDMA in undies at Festival X

A young man thought he was home and dry when he smuggled pills into a festival last year. That was until a police dog caught a whiff of him.

The Ripple Effect – Drugs

A man is counting the cost of attempting to smuggle drugs into a music festival – having spent several hundreds of dollars on flights to attend court.

Clayton Barron, 20, was branded a “an idiotic young boy” in court on Tuesday after being caught in possession of six capsules of MDMA at Festival X last year.

He thought he had evaded checks only for drug dog Gilly to alert police to the pills.

When asked why he smuggled the drugs in his underwear into Festival X by Magistrate Louise McManus, he said he “just wanted to do MDMA at a festival”.

He was one of four people appearing in Burwood Local Court yesterday following their arrest at Festival X last year.

Those arrested at the major event at Sydney Olympic Park ranged from a 20-year-old real estate agent also caught with MDMA and a 19-year-old receptionist who was so drunk when she arrived that police charged her and kept her in the cells for six hours.

Magistrate McManus warned the Victorian-native that criminals “will tell you anything, they don’t care what’s in the drugs”.

Barron, from Grovedale just outside Geelong, said after spending $700 in flights to front court in Sydney yesterday that the entire experience was “a waste of money”.

“You had a choice between being an idiotic young boy and an intelligent young man … this was not the decision of an intelligent young man,” Magistrate McManus said.

“This is my third matter today from that same festival … what a waste of money.”

Barron was sentenced to a 15 month conditional release order with no conviction recorded.
