Hopes and dreams will take flight as part of EDGE Balmain this week.

The Wishing Wings Community Project, spearheaded by Petersham visual artist Aaron McGarry, has produced five sets of ribbon wings that carry positive messages from the inner west community.

McGarry worked with community groups who literally tied their wishes onto his wings.

”We have so much negative things in the world, I really wanted to create an opportunity for people to come together and talk about their hopes, dreams and wishes,” McGarry said.

“Community members have tied their hopes, dreams and wishes onto the wishing wings and we will release them during the festival.”

The wishing wings, one of six EDGE Balmain art pop-ups, will be shining a light on our dreams at the Gladstone Park gates, Callan Park gates and Balmain Town Hall during the festival that runs from Thursday to Sunday.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said Darling St and Balmain Rd would come alive with performance, installations and creative trails during this festival that has a special emphasis on live music.

The big live music line-up includes outdoor classical music event Classic at Callan Park on Saturday from 5pm-8pm and Jazz in the Park, on Sunday from 3pm-6pm at Gladstone Park, that has Emma Pask as the headliner.

“Here in the ‘People’s Republic of the Inner West’, we have more arts workers in creative industries than in any other region in Australia,” Cr Byrne said.

“Our goal is to the be the national capital of independent arts and culture. That’s what EDGE is all about.”

The festival will be launched at Balmain Town Hall at 6.30pm on Thursday with live music, audio visual storytelling and free ice cream.

Other highlights include the Persian Coffee House, at Callan Park’s Community Refugee Welcome Centre, featuring multimedia, multi-sensory art, sound and performance installation on Saturday and Sunday.
