“IT is the best burger I’ve ever tasted”. That’s a pretty big claim, but The Annandale Hotel marketing manager Jared Barry stands by it.
“It’s the best cheeseburger with out a doubt,” he said. “No, I’d go one better than that, it’s the best burger of any sort I’ve ever tasted.”
A Balmain local, Mr Barry stumbled across the “perfect burger” one Saturday morning while checking out the weekly Balmain Markets.
“I’ve tried a lot of burgers in my time — trust me on that,” he said.
“But when I first had one of these — there’s the two patties, heaps of cheese, just a good sauce — they really just are the best.”
With the burger wars happening around Sydney, many would think that Mr Barry would be talking about a burger made by some award-winning chef in a designer kitchen — But he’s not.
The ultimate cheeseburger is crafted by a 24-year-old lad called Grant Lawn, who is fast becoming known as Bush Sydney because of his set up on a portable barbecue, and his almost Zen-like approach to cooking
”The beauty of bush (what he calls his business/setup) is it’s mobile,” Mr Lawn said.
“The cheeseburger is just really simple, and it’s definitely a favourite dish.
“People love it.”
A burger-lover at heart, but a marketing manager by day, Mr Barry was quick to introduce himself to Mr Lawn and offer him a pop up spot to spruik his burgers at the Annandale Hotel.
“We’d already been looking for pop up options, so this was a no brainer, I think they’re going to go off.,” Mr Barry said.
Mr Lawn said he’s going to make up about 170 burgers tonight, and he’s hoping The Annandale locals will love them.
He’ll be setting up his portable cooking kit, and selling the cheeseburgers from about 6pm tonight, and in two weeks on February 19th.
At $10 a burger you can’t get a better deal on a Friday night feed.
Mr Lawn has always loved cooking, and in October last year he decided to try his luck at the Balmain Markets.
He said he cooks because he believes food brings people together, encourages thoughtful conversation and creates happiness.
He’s hitting the mark quite well, because his double-cheeseburger definitely brings happiness.
Mr Lawn said he’s planning on extending his repertoire beyond cheeseburgers, and he already has plenty of fans for a grapefruit dish topped with his nan’s homemade honey.
“Food to me is about giving, loving, sharing and growing and creating,” he said.
“If I’m ever really successful I’ll be able to give back to people
“We already head down when we can to Woolloomooloo and do street cook-offs for the homeless around there.
“And I’d love to be able to do that more often.
“It’s just a little moment of serenity between the challenges and freedom.”
