The first stage in a massive $209 million plan by the Burwood RSL to turn the ageing Club Burwood into an 18-storey hub topped with a “sky bar” has gone through a Sydney planning panel.

The wheels are moving as the first stage in the gigantic George St proposal to redevelop the club was lodged with the Sydney East Planning Panel on October 23.

As part of stage one the Burwood RSL is planning to demolish the current structure and build four storeys on top of six levels of underground carparks.

Once completed, the site is set to be a jewel in the crown of the group’s set of clubs in the inner west.

The project, when finished, will include a luxury sky-bar on top of 18 storeys, a 600-seat theatre, restaurants, bars and a hotel of 200 rooms occupying nine floors.

The hotel will bear the name of hospitality multinational Accor.

The club had recently bought land on George St and planned to move its operations there and to sell property on nearby Shaftsbury Rd in part to help fund the $209 million proposal.

The club had been on Shaftsbury Rd since 1950.

The Burwood RSL has two sister clubs Club Burwood and the Croydon Park Club.

The Sydney East Planning Panel approved the plans for the overall project last year.

Burwood Council has also previously recommended those plans be approved in documents submitted with the development application.

The project, once approved, is set to take three years to finish.
