Gym junkies of the Illawarra have spoken and declared Suzie Lubuska, the owner of Wonder Woman Workshops Aus in Tongarra, as the best personal trainer in the region.
Ms Lubuska, who has run the all-women gym from her existing location since 2016, received an overwhelming number of nominations from loyal clients who lauded her as “life changing”.
“The gym, atmosphere and community Suze has created is like no other,” Nicole Cork said.
“The all-girl vibe of turn up and lift heavy in a safe space is amazing,” another client – Nicole McDonell – said.
Ms Lubuska was a teacher in the UK before establishing Wonder Woman Workshops UK where she ran classes in London’s Greenwich and Hyde parks out of the back of a hot pink Land Rover.
The Land Rover didn’t make it on Ms Lubuska’s return to Australia in 2016 but she took her business in a new direction by purchasing a 48-hectare lot in Tongarra to the west of Albion Park.
Ms Lubuska said her decision to focus on training women came down to communication and her ability to connect with them to achieve their goals.
“I’ve always felt better working with females because I know how to communicate with them, I know their needs and inhibitions,” she said.
“For women it’s not all about getting stronger, or losing weight, or getting faster. Sometimes it’s about coming to a safe space to train and work on your mental health.
“It is about having a community coming into the gym where women can feel confident and secure … weight loss and other things are a by-product of what I deliver.
“One of the most common comments I find is people are scared to turn up and if they do they want to blend into the wall. If I can get them to come along and relax then half my job is done.”
Ms Lubuska said she loved being in the industry because she took great satisfaction from women achieving their goals – physically and mentally.
“[It is most rewarding when they] touch base and drop a message saying they have reached a goal or lifted something they didn’t think they could lift,” she said.
“It is also satisfying helping women work on their mental health by coming to the gym, not for me, but for them wanting to change their lifestyle.
“We have some deep conversations so when people go away and do something positive that we’ve talked about in the gym it means I’ve been able to help make some really good change.”
