The father of a child allegedly sexually touched by a former schoolteacher and one-time Wests Tigers NRL player has revealed the “shock” moment the minor disclosed what allegedly occurred.
Keith Eshman, 38, is facing a jury trial in Wollongong District Court before Judge Imad Abdul-Karim, accused of touching the young student.
The trial follows Eshman’s plea of not guilty to sexually touching a child under 10, with opening statements by Crown prosecutor Nerissa Keay and defence barrister Matthew Barnes on Monday.
The alleged victim’s father took the stand on Wednesday, with Ms Keay asking him to describe the moment his child showed him how Eshman allegedly touched them.
“[They] walked over to me and grabbed my hand and put it in my lap on my private parts,” he tearfully recounted.
“I just remember saying stop; I said stop, that’s enough.
“I was in shock.”
Ms Keay told the jury the child allegedly informed their parents “sometimes he takes my hand and puts if on his private parts and rubs”.
The Crown prosecutor also submitted the former primary school teacher allegedly warned the child “don’t tell your parents”.
During opening statements, Ms Keay said the complainant’s mother reported the allegations to the school, with the principal then contacting police.
The school’s deputy principal also gave evidence on Wednesday, outlining the procedures followed after the allegation came to light.
He said the allegation was reported to the principal and then to police “immediately” after speaking with the child’s parents.
Eshman was subsequently removed from teaching duties.
Mr Barnes urged the jury to “keep an open mind” when hearing the evidence, reiterating his client had denied the allegation.
Eshman’s trial continues.
Eshman played one game for the Wests Tigers in the 2006 NRL premiership.
