A man has been charged with murder after a woman was found dead with stab wounds at a unit north of Wollongong. Officers made the shocking discovery after an ‘unusal’ series of events.

A man has been charged with murder after a woman was allegedly stabbed to death on New Year’s Day near Wollongong in a situation described by police as tragic and “unusual”.

An attempt to breath test a 56-year-old man in Nicholson St, Woonona, prompted a strange encounter which ended with the tragic discovery of the woman’s body in a Campbell St unit just after midnight on New Year’s Day.

Police had stopped the man’s car for a random breath test when he allegedly sped off and crashed into a guard rail.

The man was arrested and after a brief conversation additional officers attended the Campbell St unit, where they found the woman’s body.

The 56-year-old man has now been charged with murder and will face Wollongong Local Court today.

Wollongong Police District Inspector Angela Burnell said police had spoken to him for several hours at Wollongong police station.

“A 56-year-old man was assisting police with their inquiries,” Inspector Burnell said.

“He is known to the female and police are currently investigating the nature of their relationship.”

Inspector Burnell said it was a shocking scene for officers.

“It’s a tragic series of events, especially during the festive season,” Inspector Burnell said.

“It’s not an ordinary situation and we are aware of the gravity of what’s happened for the local community.”

The man was taken to hospital under police guard after suffering minor injuries in the crash before he was returned to Wollongong police station.

“He was then treated for some lacerations but he had been back at the police station for several hours assisting police with their inquiries,” Inspector Burnell said.
