A young man accused of an “unprovoked attack” at an Illawarra shopping complex this year has been refused bail.
Noah Farrawell, 24, appeared via video link in Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday after being charged with destroying or damaging property, common assault, robbery and attempting to shoplift.
The Warilla man stammered and gestured as police prosecutor Sergeant Tanya Pavlin told the court about the alleged “unprovoked attack on random members of the community”.
Sgt Pavlin said the alleged offending was captured on CCTV and viewed by multiple witnesses.
The court also heard Farrawell was on a community correction order and had a “long criminal history”.
Defence lawyer Emel Ozer told the court Farrawell has “clear mental health issues” including an acquired brain injury, though she conceded the allegations were ”very serious”.
Ms Ozer submitted a ban on Farrawell attending Warilla Grove could be put in place as a bail condition, however, that didn't convince Registrar Tina McKenna.
“I have strong concerns about him complying with any bail conditions, and it's a strong prosecution case,” Ms McKenna said.
“He has a history of non-compliance and a decent criminal history of similar matters.
“His demeanour in court and some of the things he has said gives me no confidence I can put in place bail conditions that would mitigate the risks of further offending.”
Farrawell will next appear in Wollongong Local Court on Monday, January 9.
