A man has been refused bail after he allegedly broke into a woman’s home and stole her belongings on Christmas Day.
Grant Ryan Curry, 39, appeared in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday after he was charged with break and enter and steal in company on December 25 at Goulburn.
The court heard Curry was allegedly found inside a woman’s home where he was arrested, as was his co-accused who was allegedly found with the stolen items.
The woman allegedly identified the items as her belongings.
Curry allegedly told police he knew the woman and had permission to stay at her house but had not met her before. However, the woman allegedly claimed she did not know Curry.
No details of which items were allegedly stolen were detailed in court.
The court heard Curry had a lengthy criminal history and was placed on a community correction order as recently as November last year.
He also had breaches of apprehended domestic violence orders, calls up for other matters, and had been issued with arrest warrants in the past when he failed to appear in court.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Kylie Talty said if Curry was convicted he would likely face a custodial sentence and opposed his release.
The court heard Curry was an Aboriginal man who strongly denied the allegations and needed to be at liberty to defend them.
The court heard he could live in Goulburn and report to police as often as required, was on the methadone program and wanted to organise mental-health treatment.
The court heard Curry had recently become employed at Alpine Lodge Motel as a cleaner and would agree not to go within 100m of the alleged victim’s home.
Registrar Bruiceen Coulthard refused to grant bail because she did not believe Curry would comply with any bail conditions placed on him given his record.
The case was adjourned to January 9.
