American fast-food joint Carl’s Jr is set to open its doors in Warrawong, however, it will have some Mexican competition next door.

One of Australia‘s fastest growing food chains is setting up another outlet in the Illawarra.

A development application lodged with Wollongong Council this month indicates Guzman y Gomez will be opening its doors in Warrawong.

The Mexican takeaway store has lined up the vacant lot at 27-41 King St, Warrawong, which once housed a Nissan and Suzuki car dealership.

The popular eatery was established in Newtown in 2006 and now operates more than 150 stores in Australia, Singapore, Japan and the USA.

Two of those stores are in the Illawarra with one in Stockland Shellharbour and the other in Wollongong Central, however, the proposed Warrawong site would be the first with a drive-through.

The proposal includes an indoor-outdoor dining area that can cater for 40 people while the operational overview said the store would operate from 6am to midnight seven days a week.

The DA will be on exhibition until Friday, August 19, but anyone who has driven past the site recently may have noticed construction is already underway on the lot next to the site in question.

The fence hoardings highlight the construction of a service station featuring American burger joint Carl‘s Jr.

The burger bar, which was passed through the council last year, will be attached to an Australian-owned Jasbe Petroleum.

Carl‘s Jr opened its doors in California more than 80 years ago and has over 3000 stores worldwide.

There are 36 stores in Australia including four in NSW with a fifth in Bringelly about to open its doors.
