Teens wreak havoc with bats and chainsaws

Shocking vision of masked teenagers running through an Illawarra carpark armed with chainsaws and baseball bats has left Albion Park residents concerned, fearing the behaviour is becoming more common.

The footage was taken at Albion Park’s Centro Shopping Centre just before 10pm on October 19, capturing the moment several teenagers chase another group down, threatening them with wooden bats and chainsaws.

During the video, some of the masked group members can be heard swearing at the other teens, while others yell “chase them” and “come here you f***ing dogs”.

While short, the shocking 45-second video has made a big impact, with locals urging people to report the behaviour of the growing number of anti-social teens.

The footage has been labelled “shocking” and worrying” by residents.

Albion Park resident and Shellharbour City Councillor Kellie Marsh said the “disturbing” antics had left residents in a state of worry and needed urgent addressing.

“We need to make sure we stop this kind of behaviour,” she said.

“On social media we’ve seen quite a few instances of this kind of anti-social behaviour as well as car break ins … we all deserve to go out and feel safe in our community so this needs to stop.”

Ms Marsh said she believed the violent behaviour in Albion Park became more common over the summer months, with children on holidays and able to stay out longer.

“A resident nearby the shopping centre said it wasn’t the first time something like this had happened … they said they’ve heard them screaming and yelling out there before,” she said.

While the behaviour has been witnessed by Albion Park locals multiple times, Ms Marsh said people were worried about reporting, and getting involved in the incidents.

“We’ve got a good community on the whole and this kind of behaviour and violence in any form will not be tolerated,” she said.

“I implore any members of the community to ring Crime Stoppers and report without fear of retribution,” she said.

A NSW Police spokesman confirmed officers were called to the carpark on October 19, and that investigations into the incident were ongoing.

“Police attended and detained a group of youths,” they said.

“During a search of the area, multiple weapons and a chainsaw were found in nearby bushland.”

The spokesman said the group of young people were issued with a move on direction, and issued a warning to the public that it is “an offence to carry weapons”.

While pleased police were investigating the incident, Ms Marsh said she was disappointed the teens were “let off”.

“I’m calling on tougher action, whether it’s through the legislators or directly with police- that does not pass the pub test as far as Albion Park residents are concerned,” she said.

“We need some sort of punishment for the kids, how are they going to learn anything otherwise.

“No matter what time of day or night, the community should be able to go out without fear of seeing feral youth run amok in the street.”
