Police are continuing their search for a missing fisherman in waters off Port Kembla.
The search for 66-year-old Van Hai Tran was launched on Monday afternoon, after police located an abandoned car at Hill 60 just after midday, following reports from concerned family members.
Lake Illawarra Police District inspector James Dark Said Mr Tran left Bankstown on Saturday morning to go fishing at Port Kembla.
“He’s come down fishing by himself and he hasn’t returned home, and as a result some family came down today and reported him missing,” he said.
“Police have attended, searched the waterways with PolAir and the Marine Area Command.”
Inspector Dark said while it was not unusual for Mr Tran to go fishing at Port Kembla for a few days at a time, his family had grown concerned due to lack of contact with him.
“[His family] are obviously very stressed as to where he is,” he said.
“It’s not uncommon [for him to come here] for a couple of days but he doesn’t have his phone with him so he hasn’t been able to be contacted.”
Police are not certain on exactly where the 66-year-old was fishing over the weekend, and have not located any of his equipment during the search.
Inspector Dark said police held serious concerns for Mr Tran’s safety, fearing he may have been washed off the rocks in the high seas.
The choppy, windy conditions made the search difficult on Monday, with Inspector Dark warning other fisherman to take care in poor conditions.
“If you are alone obviously tell people where you are going fishing, the time expected you’ll be out of there and certainly water life jackets,” he said.
Police have urged anyone who may have seen Mr Tran fishing over the weekend to come forward.
