Police have launched an investigation after a man’s body was discovered floating in shallow water at Puckey’s Estate on Monday morning.
Shortly after 9am on Monday, police and emergency services were called to the location following reports a body had been discovered by two people on their morning walk.
Detectives and police officers were at the scene, located outside the Lagoon Seafood Restaurant, for several hours, after establishing a crime scene and setting up a tent over the man’s body.
On Monday afternoon, a police spokesman confirmed the death was not being treated as suspicious.
“The man’s personal belongings were located nearby,” they said.
“While he is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be an Illawarra man aged in his 40s.
Two women, who didn’t wish to be named, said they noticed the body around 8.30am this morning, but thought it was debris.
“We came down to the beach this morning around 8.30am and we saw something red and blue,” one of the women said.
“We were going to take the dog around to have a look but decided against it and we continued on our walk.
When the pair arrived back, there were police everywhere, and they were told it was in fact a man’s body that had been found on the shoreline.
“We went into a bit shock,” the other woman said.
“I feel a bit sad I didn’t do anything about it … I thought it was debris initially, it looked a bit like a body but I thought it was debris because there quite often is a lot around that area.”
The police spokesman confirmed a report will now be prepared for the coroner.
