A professional boxer who goes by the alias “Miss Business” punched a woman in the face during an altercation while lining up for a ride at a country show in the Illawarra.

Former Australian super featherweight titleholder Tywarna Netta Beth Campbell was sentenced in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday after previously pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The 24-year-old was sentenced alongside her co-offender Alex David Peterson, 34, who previously pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault.

The court heard the assaults took place at the Dapto Country Show in September, 2023, when Campbell and Peterson confronted two women near the front of a line for a ride.

Documents tendered in court state Peterson locked into a “tense verbal exchange” with one of the women who he pushed to the ground.

Campbell then began arguing with the other woman with the two grabbing each other’s arms and breaking into a scuffle.

The documents state Campbell lands two punches to the woman’s face, leaving the victim with a graze to her lip and cut below her eyebrow.

Peterson grabbed the woman who was punched by Campbell “very tightly” because she was holding the boxer’s hair.

The documents heard Campbell and Peterson left the showground before handing themselves into police three weeks later.

In court on Tuesday, Campbell’s lawyer asked for a non-conviction citing potential ramifications for her boxing career.

“She’s a professional fighter and she punched someone in the head,” Magistrate Michael Love said.

“One is a boxer and one is a man mountain … I am not doing it (giving a non-conviction), it is too big of an ask, I am not doing it.”

Campbell wrote a letter to the court describing her offending as “incredibly stupid” and “embarrassing”, adding she was “ashamed” of her actions.

The court heard Peterson had a “litany of violence” on his record, but his lawyer Jermaine Corban submitted his client’s offending in this case was at the “lower end”.

Peterson said in a letter to the court: “I wish I had my time over.”

In sentencing, Mr Love said the “facts are appalling” and made worse by the presence of children at the family-friendly event.

“There needs to be significant general deterrence for this type of offending,” Mr Love said.

The magistrate noted Campbell had a “number of driving matters” on her record which indicated “continual disobedience of the law”.

Mr Love said Campbell’s offending was “towards the mid-range” when sentencing her to a 12-month community correction order.

The magistrate handed down the same punishment for Peterson, noting his criminal record was worse than Campbell’s despite the offending on this occasion not being as serious.
