One man has been charged while two others are on the run following a police pursuit through the Dapto area today.

Lake Illawarra Police District chief inspector Brian Pedersen said the pursuit was initiated about 10.30am after the driver of a black Mazda 2 failed to stop for a breath test on Cleveland Road, Dapto.

“The pursuit was terminated after a short time and based on information received from the public the car was located abandoned on Boddington Way,” he said.

“Three people were seen leaving the vehicle and running into the nearby scrub.”

As a result, a search for two men and a woman was initiated, with PolAir and several police crews scouring the area.

Dapto Public School was placed in lockdown for a short time due to fears those on the run were armed, but Chief Inspector Pedersen said this was not the case and no one was in possession of a firearm.

One of the men, aged 27, was located with the help of the dog squad, and Chief Inspector Pedersen said he had been arrested and taken into police custody as a result.

“He sustained a bite to his leg from one of the dogs,” he said.

“But the other two people are yet to be located.”

Later on Thursday afternoon, the man was charged with not disclosing driver’s/other passenger’s identity, and is due to appear in court tomorrow.

Chief Inspector Pedersen said the details around why the occupants of the car took off into the bush were still a mystery.

“It might be as simple as the driver isn’t licensed, or they might have had drugs on them or they might have been wanted,” he said.

“We don’t know at this stage.”

A forensic squad has inspected and tested the abandoned Mazda 2, which is expected to lead to some answers.

“The car is not reported stolen and we are attempting to locate the owner to find out if it is actually stolen or whether it was leant to somebody,” Chief Inspector Pedersen said.

“If it was leant to someone, we want to know who was it leant to.”

Police are continuing to search for the male and female, while the abandoned vehicle has been towed away.
