A prominent Wollongong lawyer at the centre of an alleged multimillion-dollar fraud scandal is expected to plead guilty to the charges against him.

Nigel Duncan, 65, was a well-known lawyer working at Wollongong’s Maguire and McInerney Lawyers when he allegedly ran a $2.3 million fraud scheme over a six-year period from 2011 to 2017.

Police will allege Duncan embezzled more than $730,000 from the estates of his dead clients, while also making more than $1.5 million worth of fraudulent financial transactions to cover his tracks.

Duncan appeared at Wollongong Local Court on May 8, after being charged with two counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception in December 2018.

Duncan no longer works at Maguire and McInerney Lawyers, and has since moved to Dubbo following his charges.

Outside court on Wednesday, Duncan’s lawyer Sam Macedone said his client would be pleading guilty to the charges.

“We anticipate pleas of guilty,” he said.

Duncan’s bail has been continued and he will appear at Wollongong Local Court again in early June.
