A man has died after a truck struck him on a motorway south of Sydney, creating traffic chaos.

The collision, which police are not treating as suspicious, occurred on the Princes Motorway at Cataract, near Wollongong, on Friday afternoon.

Police said emergency services were called about 12.45pm to the northbound lanes of Mt Ousley Rd - a section of the motorway - about 2km from Picton Rd.

“NSW Ambulance responded but the man died at the scene,’’ a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

“Officers attached to Wollongong Police District responded and established a crime scene, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit.’’

The M1 is closed northbound at Cataract, with motorists urged to instead use the Hume Motorway.

There are reports of “chaotic traffic heading up the mountain”, and in the Wollongong-Fairy Meadow area, following the incident.
