Bradley Lonesborough accused of spitting in cop’s face after allegedly saying he had Coronavirus

A man has faced an Illawarra court wearing a protective mask where he is accused of spitting at a police officer and allegedly claiming he has Coronavirus.

A man who allegedly claimed to have COVID-19 and accused of spitting at and assaulting a senior police officer has faced court in a protective mask.

Nowra’s Bradley Lonesborough faced Wollongong Local Court in front of Magistrate Jillian Kiely on Monday, charged with two counts of assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, assault officer in execution of duty and intimidate police in execution of duty.

According to court documents, police allege around 8.30am on Saturday morning, officers from South Coast Police District attended Scenic Drive, Nowra, and spoke with a man who had been seen “acting erratically”.

As police arrived, it’s alleged Lonesborough punched a senior constable in the face, before more police were called to the scene to try and subdue him. 

During the struggle with the senior cop, police allege Lonesborough spat in his face while claiming to have the deadly coronavirus. 

After subduing Lonesborough with OC spray, police arrested him and took him to Shoalhaven Hospital. During the arrest the senior constable sustained bruising and abrasions to his face, while the senior constable who assisted in the arrest sprained her wrist.

After being released, Lonesborough was taken to Nowra Police Station and charged. During his appearance in court on Monday, Lonesborough could be seen wearing a protective mask on video link from South Coast Correctional Centre. 

During the short appearance, Lonesborough’s lawyer did not apply for bail on his client’s behalf.

The matter was adjourned to April 14 where it is expected he will make an application for bail.
