New 14-storey apartment block proposed for Kembla St, Wollongong
A 14-storey apartment block has been proposed for Kembla Street in Wollongong’s CBD.
A 14-storey apartment block has been proposed for Kembla Street in Wollongong’s CBD, complete with both residential and commercial tenancies.
A development application has been lodged with Wollongong City Council for the construction of the apartment block, which, if approved, would be built opposite the Woolworths supermarket complex at 71 to 77 Kembla Street.
The application seeks approval for a mixed use development which includes eight commercial tenancies on the first two floors, followed by residential apartments and a penthouse on top.
According to the development application, there will be 102 apartments in the complex as well as 167 parking spaces, 63 of which will be for visitors and commercial parking.
Of the 102 apartments, 21 will be one bedroom, 59 will be two bedroom and 22 will be three bedroom apartments.
The ground floor will provide four commercial spaces as will level one.
Level two will feature 11 residential units, a communal room, communal open space and landscaping and a swimming pool.
Levels three to six will have 12 residential units on each floor while level seven will have seven units as well as a communal garden and open space.
Levels eight to 12 will have seven residential units on each level while level 13 will be home to a penthouse.

There is currently a two-storey building on the site, which has already been approved for demolition.
A traffic study has been completed as part of the application, which indicates almost 500 extra vehicle movements will occur in the CBD every day as a result of the development.
“It is assumed that most movements will be in the peak AM and peak PM periods coinciding the commencement and completion of the average working day,” the application said.
Due to the central location of the proposed development, the report indicated residents may be more likely to walk or use public transport.
The application will be on exhibition with Wollongong City Council until June 26.
