Paramedics say a motorcyclist is in a critical and unstable condition after a three-vehicle crash on the M1 at Bulli Tops on Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were called to the scene just before 5am with initial reports suggesting a truck and a motorcycle collided in the northbound lanes north of Wollongong.
However, NSW Ambulance Duty Operations Manager Norm Rees said it became clear a car lost control on a blind corner, triggering the events.
“It appears that the driver (of the car) may have lost control of his vehicle, not driving to the conditions, and he’s … hit the motorcyclist,” he said.
“(The motorcyclist) has then been ejected from his bike and a truck has come around the corner and found the motorcyclist laying on the road and jackknifed the truck.”
Mr Rees said conditions were difficult, due to the location of the accident, the wet weather, and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The actual dog of the B-double harshly impacted on him and had to be reversed out of the way,” he said.
While paramedics rushed to the scene, bystanders and off-duty police officers assisted the man, who suffered serious abdomen and pelvic injuries and internal bleeding.
After he was stabilised, the man, aged 35, was taken to St George Hospital under police guard. The driver of the truck and the car both returned negative roadside breath tests, though were both taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
