Police have launched a probe after a black pistol wrapped in a sock was found at an Illawarra sporting ground.

About 2.30pm on Sunday, October 6 last year, a 37-year-old man attended a sporting event at Thomas Dalton Park on Pioneer Rd, Fairy Meadow, when he discovered a grey Puma backpack, police said in a statement.

A search of the bag revealed a black pistol wrapped in a sock, which was stuffed inside a clear zip-lock bag.

The man reported the concerning discovery to Wollongong Police District, who launched an investigation.

The pistol was subject to a forensic examination by specialist police.

Thomas Dalton Park, which hosts NSW cricket matches and AFL games, is also popular with primary schools in the region, who utilise the venue for sports carnivals and other sporting events.

As inquiries continue, police are urging anyone with information to contact Wollongong Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
