A 55-year-old man has died after being swept into water while rock fishing in Kiama on Sunday.

Police have been told just before 2am on June 16, the man was rock fishing at Marsden Head, Kiama, with two other men, when he was washed off the rock by a wave.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District and NSW Ambulance were notified and attended to commence a search for the man.

The man, who was a Chinese National, was found near the Little Blowhole a short time later and taken to Wollongong Hospital by helicopter, where he was pronounced dead.

The man was not wearing a life jacket and was unable to swim.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
