Kieren Melvin: Opportunistic thief set for sentencing

A young man who knocked off a sanga and an unsuspecting victim’s expensive pushie will be sentenced next month. Read about his long list of offending.

An opportunistic thief will be sentenced in September for a litany of offences carried out in recent months.

Kieren Melvin, 22, pleaded guilty to three counts of contravening an apprehended violence order, larceny, shoplifting and possessing a prohibited drug.

A two-year AVO was in place preventing the Wollongong man from contacting or approaching a woman, however, he was with her three times between April and July this year.

The third breach came just a week after the second with a witness tipping police off that Melvin had entered the woman’s unit.

The police arrived shortly after the tip off and when they knocked on the door Melvin answered with the woman sighted inside.

Melvin told police that the AVO had been varied allowing him to contact the woman, however, no such variation had been made.

In June, Melvin was also busted committing a couple of crooked offences.

The first came on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 8 when Melvin took advantage of a five-finger discount at Woolworths in the Wollongong CBD by nicking off with a $7 sandwich and an $8 bottle of David Beckham deodorant.

A week later Melvin stepped up his thievery by making off with a $650 Giant mountain bike.

The bike had been padlocked next to a taxi rank on Church St, Wollongong, when Melvin busted the lock and rode off with it.

The victim had left the bike for less than 30 minutes and when he returned he reported the robbery to police.

It didn’t take long - 40 minutes in fact - for the police to get to the bottom of the crime, locating Melvin outside the Greater Union Cinema in the heart of Wollongong.

Melvin made a frank admission that “No one gave me permission to take it, I just took it”.

Melvin will be sentenced on Thursday, September 15.
