Kane Ian Broadbent: Illawarra man challenges assault charges in court

A Woonona man accused of assaulting his partner while he was desperate for some cannabis has pleaded not guilty. Find out what he had to say in court.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

An unemployed man accused of stamping on his girlfriend’s broken toe and slapping her across the face has lashed out at a magistrate in Wollongong Local Court.

Kane Ian Broadbent, 26, appeared via video link to face two charges being common assault and contravening an apprehended violence order.

The alleged incident occurred on Wednesday, June 29, this year, around six weeks after an AVO was taken out by Broadbent’s girlfriend against him.

The AVO prohibited Broadbent from assaulting, threatening, stalking, harassing, intimidating or recklessly destroying or damaging any property of the woman he had been with since the turn of the year.

However, it did not restrict Broadbent from contacting his girlfriend or staying at her Woonona home which is where he was on the day in question.

According to documents tendered in court, his girlfriend was scrambling to find her “vape juice” before heading to an appointment and when she asked a bedbound Broadbent about its whereabouts he began to complain about a toothache and not having any cannabis cones to smoke.

According to police allegations contained in court documents, Broadbent jumped out of bed and stamped on her already broken toe and as she yelped in pain, he threw random items around the room and at her.

The alleged victim informed police she’d been pushed into a mirror which fell on her and as she struggled to get it off of her, Broadbent yelled at her to stop complaining because it was making his toothache worse.

The court documents said the woman managed to contact triple-0 where she told the operator she was trapped underneath a mirror with Broadbent able to be heard yelling “Shut your whining mouth”.

It’s alleged after the victim was freed from underneath the mirror, Broadbent threw a set of house keys at her before slapping her across the face and calling her “ugly”.

Police arrived shortly after and after speaking to the couple they placed Broadbent under arrest.

The alleged victim told officers she was fearful he would return and while there weren’t any visible injuries, she was in pain in various areas of her body.

Magistrate Christopher McRobert heard Broadbent’s plea of not guilty before setting a hearing date for the matter later this year which triggered the accused.

“I may as well plead guilty now then,” Broadbent interjected.

“They already think I’m guilty... I’ll go back in there and rot.”

Broadbent, who has been convicted of various charges including weapons, illicit drug and stealing offences, argued he’d “pleaded guilty to everything” he’d done previously.

”I am a man of honour, that’s the way my grandmother raised me,” he sulked.

”I only kicked over a heater.”

Broadbent started kicking the door and yelled “C’mon chief, let me out” as he walked out on the proceedings.

The hearing date was set for Friday, November 25.
