A man who was assaulted in a taxi outside a stranger’s house on New Year’s Eve returned to the home hours later with mates to “punch on”, ending with a man being stabbed with a beer bottle.

Jason Weldon, 26, pleaded guilty to recklessly wounding a man during a violent daytime brawl when he appeared in Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday.

Agreed facts tendered to court said Weldon was picked up by a taxi about 5am on January 1, 2023 following New Year’s Eve celebrations but he did not realise there was another man already in the car.

The taxi driver drove the original man to an address in Barrack Heights with the intention of then dropping Weldon off.

When they arrived at the house, the man and driver argued about the fare price before he attempted to pay but his card declined.

The man paid again before he was joined by his friends, who had exited the house on Denison Ave, and they started talking to the driver and Weldon.

A woman, who was friends with the man, started arguing and became aggressive towards Weldon before she opened the car door and pulled his arm.

The woman started tapping Weldon’s face with her finger before Weldon struck her check with an open hand causing her to fall backwards.

The woman punched Weldon several times in the head and body which he tried to block.

The friend from the taxi attempted to stop the fight but the woman pushed him away and she continued to punch Weldon’s head before the driver reversed the car to try to protect Weldon.

Another mate then approached Weldon and started punching him through the open window.

The driver left with Weldon, who yelled, “I’m coming back here with boys”.

Weldon returned the next morning with two men and yelled out, “get the f--k down here, I’ve come with my boys, now you don’t want to do s--t.”

The friends walked out onto their balcony and Weldon and his friends challenged them to “punch on”.

The two groups started fighting before Weldon struck one of them – who was the last man to punch him the previous night – multiple times.

Weldon picked up a glass beer bottle he found on the ground, held it by the neck and swung it towards the man’s ribs.

The man realised he had been stabbed and fell to the ground before one of Weldon’s party said “that’s what you get” as they left.

The victim was told by his friends that Weldon had stabbed him before he had a shower and went to hospital via ambulance three hours later.

The man had multiple lacerations to his chest, upper back and arm.

Police attended and saw a broken bottle before Weldon was later arrested and charged.

Weldon will be sentenced in Wollongong District Court at a later date.
