Jarrad Pavric released to bail after appealing four month jail sentence

An Illawarra man has been sentenced to jail time after threatening to share a 14-year-old’s intimate selfies with others unless she performed sex acts on him. The police officer’s son is appealing the severity of his sentence.

Editor's Note: In September 2021, Mr Pavric was found not guilty after appealing to the District Court of NSW. Judge Penelope Wass found that the complainant was at times "unconvincing" and "unreliable". Judge Wass also found that the images sent by the complainant were not "intimate images".

A young Horsley man who threatened to release intimate selfies sent to him by a 14-year-old girl unless she performed sex acts on him has been sentenced to at least four months in jail.

Jarrad Pavric, the son of a serving Illawarra police officer, was sentenced to 11 months in jail with a non-parole period of four months on Tuesday, almost three years after he was charged under the state’s then-new ‘revenge porn’ laws.

However, moments after the sentence was handed down and Pavric was taken into custody, his defence lawyer lodged an appeal against the sentence. Magistrate Douglass agreed to release Pavric on bail as he awaits the appeal in the NSW District Court, despite the Crown prosecutor arguing the appeal was unlikely to succeed.

In handing down his sentence, Magistrate Douglass said Pavric’s offending was driven by immaturity, and “not a pedophilic tendency”.

Pavric was found guilty of guilty of five charges in March after a three-day hearing, including two counts of threatening to distribute intimate content without consent, intentionally distributing images without consent and groom child for unlawful sexual activity.

On Tuesday, the court heard he requested the 14-year-old girl send him intimate images of herself during a three-week period in September 2017, before he allegedly threatened to publicly release her pictures if she didn’t “give him a blow job” or let him “play with her tits”.

In considering his sentence, Magistrate Douglass said the facts of the matter were “troubling” given the planned nature of Pavric’s actions.

“My view is that the offence encompasses what was a very clumsy and poorly executed scheme to entice a young person to have sex with the accused,” he said.

In fixing a non-parole period of four months, Magistrate Douglass said he found special circumstances, given Pavric’s diagnosed mental health conditions, age, lack of prior offending, as well as the fact his mum was a police officer.

“Mr Pavric would ultimately be a target for other inmates in custody,” he said.

“He as a prisoner would suffer some prejudice because of the status of his mother.”

As a condition of his bail, Pavric was ordered to stay off social media applications and websites. His grandmother was also required to put up a $2000 bail surety and surrender Pavric’s passport.

His young victim was in court for the sentence on Tuesday, after her mum read a victim impact statement to the court two weeks ago, detailing how she felt “embarrassed” and now suffered from anxiety.
