A teen L-plater and a woman have been arrested after an alleged burnout and subsequent high-speed chase through the Illawarra, during which police say a baby was in the car amid the chaos.
About 7.30pm on Monday, Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol officers allegedly saw a Holden Commodore perform a burnout in Flinders, Shellharbour, before speeding off.
Police attempted to stop the car on Shellharbour Rd, however it allegedly kept driving, sparking a police pursuit through suburban streets toward Berkley.
Officers deployed road spikes in an unsuccessful bid to stop the alleged offenders before the chase was temporarily called off due to the driver’s erratic behaviour.
The Commodore was however spotted again at Five Islands Rd, Unanderra, before heading north on the Princes Hwy.
Police resumed the pursuit, during which a passenger allegedly threw a toolbox from the car window at tailing officers.
The chase continued up Mount Kembla, before the fleeing car began billowing smoke and came to a stop on Harry Graham Dr, Mount Keira.
Police arrested the driver, a 17-year-old boy, and his 20-year-old female passenger.
While searching the Holden Commodore, officers found an 11-month-old baby restrained in the back seat.
The baby was uninjured, but taken to Wollongong Hospital as a precaution and left with a family member.
The teenage driver was charged with police pursuit, drive recklessly, drive without proper control and failing to display L plates.
He was refused bail and will front Childrens Court on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the adult passenger was also issued a court attendance notice for throwing an object at police.
She will appear in Wollongong Local Court at a later date.
Police said the Department of Communities and Justice had been notified.
