A modern high-rise apartment complex has been earmarked for a site a stone’s throw away from Wollongong Hospital.
Wollongong-based Blaq Projects is proposing a 21-storey mixed-use development for a lot at 4-8 Parkinson St and 379-383 Crown St with plans currently before city council.
The application features residential, commercial and retail spaces with the former to take up the top 11 storeys of the complex.
Blaq Projects has indicated the building would include 91 “high-end residential units” with a breakdown of nine three-bedroom apartments, 65 two-bedroom apartments and 17 one-bedroom apartments.
“The development will provide a mixture of apartments,” the DA said.
“Within this mix is a range of different typologies and sizes adding to a range of choice and affordability.”
The first six floors would be made up of retail spaces while floors six through nine would be made up of commercial spaces.
The DA outlines a basement-level carpark, communal areas on various levels and a “through-site link” connecting Crown St and Parkinson St.
The building would feature multiple outdoor spaces including a communal open space on level 10 with seating, a sun deck and a swimming pool.
“This area aims to provide recreational opportunities and good quality and usable facilities,” the application said.
“Communal spaces are designed to engender community spirit for residents within the development by offering both public and private areas for congregation and activities with common areas being designed for equitable access.”
Apartment living is on the up in the CBD, however with the proposed development 300m west of Wollongong Station, it is somewhat of a rarity with a recent report highlighting 18 of the top 20 streets in the city by apartment sales volume falling to the east of the tracks.
The other two streets are Gladstone Ave and Loftus St.
The development application will be on exhibition on Wollongong Council’s website until Tuesday, September 20.
